CoastTwo shores, always in season
The shape
Sri Lanka's two monsoon seasons run opposite each other, so there is usually a coast in season whenever you come. The south delivers colonial grace, world-class surf, and blue whales at breakfast. The east offers raw, uncrowded beaches and a Sri Lanka that tourism has barely touched.
Galle Fort at sunset and Arugam Bay at dawn exist on the same island, separated by six hours and a lifetime of difference. Galle Fort, which empties of day visitors by early evening and returns to the people who live in it, is the obvious and deserved anchor of the south. Beyond its ramparts, the road thins through Unawatuna, Dalawella and Ahangama, the houses grow smaller, and the beaches empty into Hiriketiya's near-perfect cove and the long sands of Tangalle and Rekawa.
We keep four houses on retainer here, one inside the fort walls, one above a cove past Mirissa, one on a private headland east of Tangalle, and one on the east coast where Trincomalee's lagoons keep their own light. The east, Nilaveli, Passikudah, Kalkudah, runs a different season; while the south is being watered by the south-west monsoon from May, the east is in sun. None of the houses has a sign at its gate. Your driver will know where to stop.
The west coast is for arrival and for departure: Negombo's lagoon for the airport hour, Bentota and Beruwala for the river-mouth hotels, Kalpitiya's lagoon for the kite season and the resident dolphin pods. Koggala's stilt fishermen still hold their lines at first light; the blue whales off Dondra Point still surface at breakfast in their season. The coast does not need to be hurried.
